Cam Newton says he’s vaccinated
NFL quarterback Cam Newton in a new video said he’s vaccinated against the coronavirus after his release from the New England Patriots and that he wants a job with a team.
“Hell yeah I still want to play football,” Newton said in a video posted Sunday. “I still get that urge to go out and perform and do something that I’ve been doing since I was 7 years old.”
“But also it’s like, man, I’m so much more than just a football player. Respect me as such,” he added.
Newton was released before the start of the regular season after missing five days of training camp. He had been placed on the team’s COVID-19 reserve list due to a “misunderstanding” of his team’s coronavirus health and safety protocols.
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said last month that Newton’s vaccination status didn’t play a role in his release from the team.
Newton, a former league MVP, noted that a “personal decision” whether someone wants to get vaccinated.
“I got my vaccination card. I want to play football. And stop damn judging people if they do or if they don’t have the vaccination,” Newton said. “You have to do what’s right for you.”
Newton also said NFL clubs have been contacting him about his services but that the ideal situation hasn’t come about yet.
“Long story short, I’m just waiting for the right opportunity,” Newton said. “You’re probably asking yourself, ‘Don’t nobody want Cam?’ That’s a lie. I’ve been getting offers. But the realization of it is it has to be right.”
Newton’s vaccination status comes as a handful of prominent athletes have voiced hesitancy about getting the COVID-19 vaccine.
The NBA’s Brooklyn Nets suspended star guard Kyrie Irving last week for the immediate future until he’s fully vaccinated against the virus.
Irving, who has become the face of the anti-vaccination movement among athletes, shared on Instagram Live on Wednesday that his refusal to get vaccinated is in support of people who lose jobs due to vaccine mandates.
“I’m standing with all those that believe what is right. Everybody is entitled to do what they feel is what’s best for themselves. Seeing the way this is dividing our world up, it’s sad to see. People are losing jobs to mandates,” Irving said.
