Oscar nominations released; Campion makes history

Jane Campion is marking an Academy Award first, becoming the only woman to ever receive two best director nominations.

The “Power of the Dog” director picked up her second career nomination in the category when the Oscar nominees were announced on Tuesday.

The New Zealand screenwriter and producer previously earned an Oscar nod in 1994, when she was nominated in the best director category for “The Piano.”

Sixty-seven-year-old Campion wasn’t the only Oscar nominee to make history on Tuesday.

Troy Kotsur, who starred in “CODA,” became the first deaf male actor to be nominated for an Academy Award. Marlee Matlin — who took home the Oscar in 1987 for her role in “Children of a Lesser God” — is the only deaf actor to have won one of the coveted trophies.

Kotsur had at least one fan at in Washington rooting for him to win following his nomination announcement. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki tweeted, “So many good movies out there (and I have not even scratched the surface of all the good ones) but the raw beauty of the story in [“CODA”] stuck with me and so happy to see Troy Kotsur nominated.”

The 94th annual Academy Awards airs on March 27 on ABC.
