Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) took a moment in a radio interview Friday to recount his Twitter correspondence with Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi of MTV's "Jersey Shore."

"When Snooki tweeted that she was mad at Obama for raising taxes on tanning beds, I tweeted back that I would not do that [raise taxes] and that she should wear sunscreen," he told Arizona station KTAR, chuckling.

"That got more coverage — went more viral — than anything," he continued. "That same week I gave a speech on human rights in Iran, and everyone just wanted to know about Snooki."

"That right there — tweeting with Snooki — that is an American phenomenon," he said.

Snooki last tweeted at McCain on Aug. 12.

"Thanks for having my back!" she said. "I'm going to make you part of my family. Grandpa Snooki for President!
