#IvotedforHillaryClinton trending amid rising tensions with Iran

The hashtag “#IvotedforHillaryClinton” trended on Twitter Wednesday, the morning after Iran claimed responsibility for missiles hitting U.S. bases in Iraq.

Many Twitter users who voted for the former secretary of State claimed they foresaw much of President Trump’s foreign policy decisions.

My conscience is clean” one Clinton supporter’s tweet read. “I saw the danger of trump. I begged folks especially Berniebros that if they threw away their vote, they were putting this country in mortal danger. I was part of 94% of Black women who didn’t fall for Russia propaganda because #IvotedforHillaryClinton.”

Users also implied that if Clinton had won the 2016 general presidential election, the possibility of war with Iran wouldn’t be a topic of discussion. Some quoted Clinton who, while making her case against President Trump during her 2016 presidential bid, said, “A man you can bait with a tweet is not a man we can trust with nuclear weapons.”

However, others took to Twitter to point out that Clinton didn’t run on an anti-war platform.

During her 2008 bid for president she said she could “totally obliterate” Iran if they attacked Israel, and while in the Senate, Clinton voted to approve the Iraq War.

Clinton herself jumped on the trend later in the day.

The social media trend comes as the Pentagon confirmed in a statement that Iran had fired upward of 12 missiles on U.S. bases in Iraq.

“It is clear that these missiles were launched from Iran and targeted at least two Iraqi military bases hosting U.S. military and coalition personnel at Al-Assad and Irbil” the statement read.

The missile attack was in response to an airstrike ordered by Trump last week that killed Iranian Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

The president has defended the attack, stating that the strike was ordered to stop a war, not to start one.

Tuesday evening after Iranian strike on U.S. forces, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif called the missile attack “proportionate measures in self-defense” in a tweet, adding, “We do not seek escalation or war, but will defend ourselves against any aggression.”

Trump is scheduled to address the public on the attacks Wednesday at 11 a.m.
