Bill Timmons Jr., the son of a legendary Washington lobbyist, has left Prime Policy Group to start his own firm.

Timmons’s father is Bill Timmons Sr., a former aide to several Republican presidents and one of the co-founders of Timmons & Co. That firm was considered the original non-lawyer lobby practice in Washington, and merged with BKSH & Associates in 2010 to form Prime Policy.

In 2000, Timmons Jr. joined Timmons & Co., which later became part of Prime Policy. His father retired from lobbying at the end of 2009, before the merger with BKSH was official. 

{mosads}Now the younger Timmons has struck out on his own with Timmons Consulting, and is looking to pick up clients as he hangs up his K Street shingle.

“If you have a smaller number of clients, you can become, as I like to say, almost an extension of their staff. You can delve into their issues and really understand what they need and make an impact for them in Congress,” Timmons told The Hill. “You work smarter. You work more efficiently.” 

Timmons said he is enjoying the opportunity to start a new company and will be able to avoid potential conflicts by limiting his client roster. 

He said he left Prime Policy on good terms, and is already working with his former employer on behalf of one of his consulting firm’s first clients, the University of Miami. 

“I have got good relations with everyone at Prime Policy,” Timmons said. 

Charlie Black, chairman of Prime Policy, said he could see his firm partnering with Timmons on other clients in the future.

“I think so. There actually may be one or two others we will be cooperating on,” Black said.

“Bill decided that he wanted to go out on his own. He was a valued employee, but he wanted to leave, so we did it on an amicable basis. We wish him the best,” Black said.

Along with the University of Miami, Timmons is lobbying for True Position Inc., a Berwyn, Pa., company that works in location technology, according to lobbying disclosure records.

Timmons left Prime Policy at the end of 2011 and started Timmons Consulting at the beginning of 2012.

A former managing director at Prime Policy, Timmons has long been active in Republican politics, having worked for the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the Republican National Committee. He has participated in every GOP convention since 1984.

With a website in the works for his new firm, Timmons said he is in discussions with other lobbyists and will look to partner with Democrats, in particular, when working for future clients.

“My model is to partner with other lobbyists and other firms on select issues. The idea is to specifically tailor a team for each client,” Timmons said. 

Further, Timmons said he could see himself partnering with Larry Harlow, another Republican lobbyist.

“I would be delighted to partner with Larry on future clients,” Timmons said.

Harlow, who worked with Timmons at Timmons & Co. and later at Prime Policy, said he would be open to partnering with Timmons in the future. 

“It would be fun to recreate the Timmons approach in some ways again,” Harlow said. “I have a very high degree of respect for Bill Timmons. I’m sure we will able to figure out how to do something in the future.”

Harlow left Prime Policy in 2011 to form his own firm, Harlow Government Relations.
