The Trump Organization has reportedly had to lay off or furlough about 1,500 employees in the U.S. and Canada as the novel coronavirus pandemic forces multiple properties to remain closed.

The Washington Post reports that hotel employees in New York, D.C., Miami, Chicago, Las Vegas, Vancouver and Honolulu have either been laid off or furloughed. The decision comes after the company began closing its hotels and resorts in mid-March due to the outbreak. Seventeen properties are closed, while others are operating with fewer staff and services.

The layoffs include more than 200 employees at Trump’s hotel in Vancouver, Canada, and two-thirds of employees as Trump's hotel in Chicago.

The company’s actions are not unlike other hotel and resort owners who have seen a decrease in clientele due to travel restrictions and stay-at-home orders. Last month Marriott, the world's largest hotel company, began furloughing tens of thousands of workers.

The news comes a day after The New York Times reported that the Trump Organization has spoken to Deutsche Bank, its largest creditor, about delaying payments on some loans.

“I wouldn’t say you’re thriving when you decide to close down your hotels and your businesses,” Trump told reporters in March. “But is it hurting me? Yeah, it’s hurting me, and it’s hurting Hilton, and it’s hurting all of the great hotel chains all over the world.”
