About 3 in 4 Americans say companies have been more reliable than the federal government during the coronavirus pandemic, according to an Axios/Harris poll released early Thursday.

Roughly 75 percent of consumers said overall “companies were more reliable than the federal government in keeping America running,” while 81 percent say that large companies “are even more vital now to America's future than before the pandemic.”

The companies with the highest net approval are ones that have been focused on solving problems that have sprung from the pandemic, such as grocery stores, which have a net approval rating of 35 percent, technology firms, which have a net approval of 28 percent, and telecommunications companies, which have a net approval of 19 percent.

Pharmacies and drug stores also have a net approval of 17 percent.

Media companies and airlines fared the worst in the poll, garnering net negative approval ratings by 5 percent and 7 percent, respectively.

The top three individual companies were Clorox, with an overall score of 82.8, Hershey, with an overall score of 81.5, and Amazon, with an overall score of 81.4. Second to last was The Trump Organization with a score of 54.5, and Juul came in last with 51.

The poll ranked firms based on scores given by consumers on affinity, citizenship, ethics, culture, vision, growth and products and services, with affinity weighted higher than all the other categories.

“What real people think about your company has never mattered more than it does today. Your brand perception can impact everything from recruitment and retention to sales and ultimately, the bottom line,” said Axios CEO and co-founder Jim VandeHei.

The poll comes amid a rise in coronavirus cases across the country, particularly in the South and West, and polls showing Americans dissatisfied with President TrumpDonald John TrumpTrump alludes to possible 2024 run in White House remarks Trump threatens to veto defense bill over tech liability shield Tiger King's attorney believes they're close to getting pardon from Trump MORE’s response to the pandemic.

“Amid a vacuum of leadership, Americans turned to corporations—especially large ones—as vital leaders in solving the pandemic and restoring the American way of life,” pollsters said

The Axios/Harris poll surveyed 34,026 Americans.
