Former Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) will join the board of Michael Best Strategies, the lobbying firm announced Wednesday.

Gardner, a one-term senator, lost his reelection bid to Democrat John Hickenlooper in November. Gardner chaired the Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee on Energy and led the National Republican Senatorial Committee from 2017 to 2019.

Michael Best Strategies is run by Reince Priebus, who served as former President Trump’s White House chief of staff and as Republican National Committee chairman. The firm has expanded this year, naming former Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.) to its board of advisers in March.

“Cory is an efficient communicator and leader and has an extraordinary track record of success in an array of policy and legislative matters,” Priebus said in a statement. “As another tenured former government representative joins our board, Cory’s addition will greatly benefit Michael Best Strategies as we continue to deepen our leadership and advisory positions with former lawmakers.”

Politico Playbook first reported the news of Gardner’s hiring early Wednesday.

Gardner will “collaborate with the firm on business development and public policy, while providing strategic advice and counsel to clients,” the firm said in a statement.

Michael Best Strategies brought in $1.6 million from 33 lobbying clients through the first three months of 2021, according to That’s up from $895,000 during the same period last year.

Gardner is one of many lawmakers who retired or lost reelection in 2020 to join a lobbying firm.

Former Sen. Doug Jones (D-Ala.) joined lobbying and law firm Arent Fox last month. Former Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) was hired by lobbying firm Capitol Counsel in February.

On the House side, former committee chairs Mike Conaway (R-Texas) and Greg Walden (R-Ore.) have launched their own lobbying and consulting firms. Former Rep. John Shimkus (R-Ill.) also joined KBS Group, the lobbying firm announced Monday.
