Corporate PACs have resumed bankrolling House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (Calif.) after briefly shunning the GOP lawmaker for challenging the 2020 election results.

McCarthy raised more than $500,000 from more than 60 corporate and business association PACs in the second quarter of 2021, according to Federal Election Commission filings released Thursday. Those figures include donations to his campaign account and joint fundraising committee, the McCarthy Victory Fund. 

The influx of donations is a significant turnaround for the Republican leader, who took in just two corporate PAC donations through the first three months of the year.

McCarthy received PAC donations from several major corporations that initially paused their political giving following the Jan. 6 riot, including Boeing, General Motors, Ford and UPS. Abbott Laboratories’ PAC, which had not made donations to any candidates through May, gave $10,000.

Dozens of companies briefly paused their PAC giving after the Capitol attack. But only a handful of firms said they would suspend donations to the 147 Republican lawmakers who voted against certifying the 2020 election results. McCarthy joined that effort and backed a Texas lawsuit to challenge President Biden’s victory.

Corporate PACs typically give big sums to congressional leaders on both sides of the aisle with the understanding that control of Congress frequently flips. McCarthy has guaranteed that Republicans will retake the House in 2022, a development that would likely make him Speaker. 

“We’re going to get the majority back. We’re five seats away,” McCarthy told supporters at the Conservative Political Action Conference earlier this year. “I would bet my house” on it, he added.

McCarthy’s political operation on Wednesday said it raised a staggering $16.5 million in the second quarter of the year. Much of that money is being transferred to Republican House candidates and the National Republican Congressional Committee.
