Story at a glance

  • Every year, the federal government publishes information about migration between states.
  • One Reddit user used data for 2019 to create a map showing where people from each state were most likely to move.
  • Texas and Florida topped the list, with California, Washington and Minnesota coming in close after.

This year wasn’t the best time to move, what with a global coronavirus pandemic and all. But a weak housing market and cabin fever from months in quarantine might mean you’re ready to flee the state once it’s safe.

So where do you go? Well, if the Before Times are any indicator, probably Texas.

[OC] Most common destination of residents leaving a state, 2019 from r/dataisbeautiful

The author, a Reddit user called "shereth78," said they used the state-to-state migration tables from the Census Bureau to illustrate where people are most likely to move to when they leave a state. The Lone Star state was the most popular destination in the most states, including for California and all of Texas' bordering states.

The Bureau publishes yearly data on migration from state to state using information from the annual American Community Survey. More than 7 million Americans resided in a different state in 2018 than in 2019, with a margin of error (so give or take) nearly 65,000 (there are scaled margins of error for each of the following numbers). Florida reported 601,611 new residents from out of state, more than any other state, with Texas close behind with 559,661 new residents and California in third with 480,204 new residents.

The next tier of popularity was down to 315,215 new residents from out of state in North Carolina, with several others between 300,000 and 200,000: Georgia, Pennsylvania, Virginia, New York, Arizona, Colorado, Washington and Ohio.

The least popular states to move to? Vermont has the honor of claiming just 21,212 new residents from out of state in 2019, with South Dakota, Wyoming, Puerto Rico and Alaska rounding out the bottom five — all less than 35,000.
