A California man has been arrested in connection with a theft of roughly 21 tons of pistachios valued at more than $100,000, authorities said Saturday.
The Tulare County Sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post that 34-year-old Alberto Montemayor, of Montemayor Trucking, was arrested after a routine audit by Touchstone Pistachio Company revealed that 42,000 pounds of pistachios were missing. The company contacted authorities to investigate on June 17.
“Yesterday, investigative leads in Fresno and Kern County discovered the tractor trailer containing the pistachios had been moved from the Montemayor Trucking lot in Delano to a nearby lot,” the post read.

The nuts, originally stored in 2,000-pound sacks, had been placed into smaller sacks and moved to a separate trailer in a nearby lot for presumed resale. Authorities returned the remaining pistachios to Touchstone.
“Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Tulare County Sheriff’s Department at (559) 733-6218 or send anonymous information by sending a text or email to TCSO@tipnow.com,” the post concluded.
CargoNet, a network of shipping firms, estimated that thieves had seized 7.6 million worth of nuts — amounting to hundreds of thousands of pounds — between 2014 and 2017, Capital Press reported.
