Story at a glance

  • The Department of Defense confirmed a leaked video of an unidentified flying object off the coast of San Diego was recorded by the Navy.
  • Now, one of the top astronomers is heading a project to study unidentified aerial phenomena.
  • The Galileo Project was funded by tech founder William Linton, who is also funding research on psilocybin, and billionaire Frank Laukien, among others.

After a leaked video forced the Pentagon to reveal they too were asking questions about UFOs, a top astronomer is joining the search for answers.

"It's a win-win proposition because even if we find that these aerial phenomena are rare atmospheric effects that are not expected, we learn something new,” Avi Loeb, a professor of science at Harvard, told NBC News. “If there is something out there, we need to find out.”

So he’s started the Galileo Project, funded by tech founder William Linton -- who is also funding research on psilocybin -- and billionaire Frank Laukien, among others. The research group aims to identify the nature of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) and other interstellar objects such as Oumuamua, which reportedly visited Earth in 2017.

Earlier this year, video of an unidentified flying object was leaked, raising questions that are still unanswered. The video obtained by documentary filmmaker Jeremy Corbell was recorded by the Navy and shows a spherical object flying and darting above the water off the coast of San Diego for several minutes before descending into the ocean.

“Why does science have to be boring?” Loeb said. “Here we are talking about a discovery that would change the history of humanity, so how dare we push it aside.”
