A Detroit post office was posthumously named for Aretha Franklin on Monday, honoring the late singer in her hometown.

“Her legacy lives on in her music, in her family. But we have added to that list of her legacy: A post office with her name on it,” said U.S. Rep. Brenda Lawrence (D-Mich.), a friend of Franklin’s who gathered with members of Franklin’s family and other officials at the former Fox Creek Post office, The Associated Press (AP) reported

Lawrence introduced the name-changing bill in Congress, and it was signed by former President Trump.

“In Jan, my bill to rename the USPS Fox Creek Station in Detroit after Aretha Franklin was signed into law,” Lawrence added on Twitter. “With her family/friends, we hosted a dedication ceremony today to honor the Queen of Soul. This building will always stand as a reminder that we all deserve a little RESPECT.”

“Sometimes people wonder if Congress can come together,” said Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.). “Congress can come together when it comes to standing up and recognizing this amazing person.”

The office, officially called the “Aretha Franklin Post Office Building,” is located five miles east of downtown Detroit and near an amphitheater named for the legendary artist, the AP noted.

Franklin died in 2018 in Detroit in her home at age 76 due to advanced pancreatic cancer.

“Aretha helped define the American experience,” former President Barack Obama said in a statement at the time. “In her voice, we could feel our history, all of it and in every shade – our power and our pain, our darkness and our light, our quest for redemption and our hard-won respect. May the Queen of Soul rest in eternal peace.”
