Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Charlie Morton threw a 16-pitch inning in the first game of the World Series Tuesday night — on a broken leg.

Morton will miss the remainder of the series after his right fibula was fractured by a 102.4-mile batted ball from Houston Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel. The right-handed pitcher was X-rayed between innings but wanted to remain in the game, Braves manager Brian Snitker said.

"He wanted to keep going because he was down in the tunnel and he was throwing against the wall," Snitker explained, noting that his leg felt fine while throwing.

The initial X-ray reportedly did not reveal a break, but a second X-ray following his final pitch of the season revealed a fracture, ESPN reported.

But despite enduring the pain of a fractured limb to secure three outs, Morton apologized to his teammates for not pitching longer.

"He was doing exactly what we hired him to do," Snitker added. "Bring credibility. He did it all year. He did it tonight. And I hate it for him. He really is the kind of guy that would break his leg and say he's sorry."

"He goes eight innings, gives up one run and is like, 'I'm sorry, guys,'" Atlanta catcher Travis d'Arnaud added. "He genuinely, sincerely feels like he shouldn't have given up a run."

The Braves took the first game against the Houston Astros 6-2. Game 2 is set for Thursday in Houston.
