Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has issued an apology and a detailed description of events leading to her drunken day at a college football game.

In this March 18, 2019, file photo, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel attends an event for Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., in Clawson, Mich.

Nessel wrote in a Facebook post her team “pleaded” with her to hire a PR team to handle the fallout from events at the Michigan State University football game, but she instead chose to explain the ordeal herself.

“Before the big game, I attended a tailgate on an empty stomach,” Nessel wrote on her personal Facebook page. “Much to my surprise, MSU tailgate’s tend to have more alcohol than food, so I thought it seemed like a good idea to eat 2 Bloody Mary’s, since as long as you put enough vegetables in them, it’s practically a salad.”

The former criminal prosecutor and civil rights attorney said she began to feel ill during MSU’s victory over rival Michigan Oct. 30. And her friends then suggested she go home to prevent her from vomiting on her constituents.

“I had a few folks help me up the stairs and someone grabbed a wheelchair so as to prevent me from stumbling in the parking lot,” she said, noting she was taken home by a designated driver.

Nessel’s post is accompanied by a photo of a woman, who appears to be Nessel, slumped over in front of a fellow fan with a University of Michigan hat pulled over her eyes.

The state’s 54th attorney general proceeded to fall asleep on her couch, but not before her wife offered her water and Tylenol for what she knew would be a skull-crushing hangover the next day.”

Nessel admitted she is “human” and that she “sometimes” screws up, saying “this was definitely one of those times.”

“My apologies to the entire state of Michigan for this mishap, but especially that Michigan fan sitting behind me. Some things you can’t un-see.”
