“The information given through the media by which the Picasso heirs would join into the market for ‘Pablo Picasso’ NFTs is thus completely wrong,” Jean-Jacques Neuer, a lawyer for the Picasso Administration, told The Associated Press in a statement Thursday.

The clarification comes after the artist’s granddaughter, Marina Picasso, and her son, — the artist’s great-grandson — Florian Picasso, showcased a ceramic in Geneva this week they said was crafted by the late Picasso and that an NFT linked to the work was set to be auctioned online in March.

NFTs, or nonfungible tokens, are units of data that appear on blockchains, a list of records and transactions linked together using cryptographic codes. Because digital art can so easily be replicated and reproduced, digital artists have begun using NFTs to mark their original works, a tech-heavy definition that boils down to something similar in concept to a coded digital trademark, and preserve its value.

“Maybe we should have been a bit more clear from the beginning,” Cyril Noterman, Florian’s business manager, told The Associated Press, clarifying that the NFTs are linked to Florian’s work and not that of his great-grandfather.

“What’s happening is that some members of the family don’t agree with the project, and don’t want the name mentioned,” Florian added.

The Picasso Administration — composed of three of the late artist’s children, Maya Widmaier Picasso, Claude Ruiz Picasso, and Paloma Ruiz Picasso, and two of his grandchildren,  Marina Ruiz Picasso and Bernard Ruiz Picasso — are the legal managers of the artist’s intellectual property and estate.

The administration’s lawyer told the associated press that Claude Ruiz Picasso, the administrator, is currently the only person who could authorize an NFT project, adding that he “does not favor one.”
