A school district in Florida has come under fire after administrators for the school dismissed a racist video made by some students over the summer as “a joke.”

According to reports by local station WJXT-TV, two white teenagers, who now attend Yulee High School, filmed a Snapchat video in which one is wearing a white hood and used the N-word.

“Hold on, you see that?” one teenager says. “It’s a n—–.”

The video ended up being shared around the school and an altercation took place at the school between the two white students and some of their Black classmates.

“The video was not meant to be shared outside of a small group of friends and it was not targeted at any particular student(s),” Nassau County, Fla. Assistant School Superintendent Mark Durham told WJXT-TV in a statement. “The two students in the video say they meant it as a joke amongst friends and did not intend for anyone outside of their small group to view it.”

Durham went on to say that the students involved in starting the altercation and the student who shared the video were disciplined, but not the students who made the video.

“While schools do have jurisdiction to discipline students for their on-line, off campus behavior under certain circumstances, this case did not meet the criteria,” Durham said.

“While the school and district find this type of joke cruel and abhorrent and would discipline the students if legally permissible, the circumstances of this case just don’t allow it. However, the student who sent the video to several, specific students does meet the criteria necessary to punish a student for their on-line behavior. The student was assigned discipline consistent with the district’s code of conduct.”

Despicable! Two Yulee HS students sent a video of them saying racial slurs, with one student in a white hood, to multiple Black students… And the students who RECEIVED the video were suspended — not those who recorded it,” attorney Ben Crump, who has an office in Florida, wrote on Twitter. “How does that make sense?! Do better!!”

Members of the football team wanted to protest the district’s response by kneeling or not playing at the upcoming game but didn’t after they were told by the school that if they didn’t play they would forfeit the season.

“I have never felt rage like” this, Melissa Ricks, the mother of one of the players, told WJXT-TV.
