An educator at a Washington, D.C., elementary school has been placed on leave after reportedly instructing third grade students to reenact the Holocaust.

According to a report by The Washington Post, the principal of Watkins Elementary School, Scott Berkowitz, sent parents and guardians an email stating the educator had students “portray participants from the Holocaust like Adolf Hitler, digging ditches to serve as mass graves, and simulated shootings,” and allegedly made antisemitic comments.

“I want to acknowledge the gravity of this poor instructional decision, as students should never be asked to act out or portray any atrocity, especially genocide, war, or murder,” the email read.

The educator was placed on leave on Friday.

One parent told Fox 5 that the children are “traumatized.”

“They are traumatized,” the mother said. “One parent said that their child was worried the teacher in question was hiding at their house. Children are having nightmares and generally having a very hard time.”
