On Monday, Bolsonaro told supporters outside the presidential palace Monday everything was “okay” following reports he had a fever.

“I’ve done a lung screening, my lung is clean, OK? I went to do a Covid exam a while ago, but everything is okay,” Bolsonaro said according to CNN.

Reports claimed Bolsonaro was showing symptoms consistent with COVID-19, including fever.

His positive test result comes days after he attended a July 4 commemoration event with the U.S. Ambassador to Brazil, Todd Chapman, CNN reports.

Bolsonaro, 65, has repeatedly minimized the danger of the virus, comparing it to “a little flu,” even as Brazil has become a global hot spot for COVID-19. The country has a total of about 1.6 million cases and more than 65,000 deaths, the second-highest death toll in the world after the U.S. Bolsonaro has also continued to appear in public at rallies and has encouraged the country to reopen, even as the number of cases in the country rise.

The Brazilian president was ordered by a federal judge last month to wear a face mask in public, as Bolsonaro frequently flouted the country’s mask mandate meant to help curb the spread of the virus.
