“I can guarantee that there’s work to do,” rector Patrick Chauvet told the news outlet following Good Friday ceremonies at the nearby church of Saint-Germain l’Auxerrois.

French President Emmanuel Macron vowed at the time to rebuild and reopen the iconic place of worship by 2024, when Paris is set to host the Summer Olympics. The AP notes French officials have since backpedaled on that ambitious timeline.

The cathedral’s lead roof and spire were destroyed by a severe fire that was sparked in the building’s attic on April 15, 2019. An electrical short-circuit was found to have likely caused the fire that ravaged the iconic cathedral.

In November 2020, crews successfully removed 200 tons of mangled roof scaffolding that surrounded the structure as it was undergoing renovations at the time of the blaze. The preliminary work had to be completed before restoration efforts could begin.

While many historical items in the cathedral require renovations, many historic relics, including the Crown of Thorns, managed to be saved.
