South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) is deploying dozens of National Guard troops to Texas to help secure the border between the U.S. and Mexico amid an influx of migrants. 

Noem announced Tuesday she will send up to 50 South Dakota National Guard troops to the Lone Star state in response to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s (R) request for help.

“The Biden Administration has failed in the most basic duty of the federal government: keeping the American people safe,” Noem said in a statement Tuesday. 

The move comes as Republican governors from Florida, Nebraska and Iowa have pledged to send law enforcement officers to aid in securing the border. 

“The border is a national security crisis that requires the kind of sustained response only the National Guard can provide. We should not be making our own communities less safe by sending our police or Highway Patrol to fix a long-term problem President Biden Administration seems unable or unwilling to solve,” Noem said.

The deployment, slated to last between 30 and 60 days, is being paid for by a private donation, according to Noem’s office. Details of the mission have yet to be finalized. 

Noem’s announcement comes as Republicans ramp up a political fight with Biden over border security. Former President Trump is set to visit the border with Abbott this week following Vice President Harris’s visit last week. 

More than 1 million migrants have been arrested at the U.S.-Mexico border so far in fiscal year 2021, according to Reuters. The outlet notes at the current pace, total border arrests this year could be the highest since 2000 when nearly 1.7 million migrants were taken into custody.
