‘That’s a bear right there:’ Family uses Ring camera to warn Amazon driver

Story at a glance

  • Recently, Josh used the Ring to alert an Amazon delivery driver that Jimmy was just ahead of him in the front yard.
  • Jimmy was able to retreat and the driver safely left the package.

A family in California used their Ring camera to warn an Amazon delivery driver that the neighborhood bear was hanging nearby.

Josh, a resident in Upland, Calif., and his family have captured video of a neighborhood bear known as Jimmy on their Ring camera multiple times. Recently, while Josh and his family were out shopping, he received a motion alert and saw Jimmy wandering around their front yard.

Soon after, he received another alert that an Amazon truck was pulling up with a delivery, the driver unaware that Jimmy was just beyond the gate. Josh initiated the camera’s two-way talk feature to warn him that a bear was nearby.

“Stop!” Josh can be heard yelling to the delivery driver. “That’s a bear right there!”

The driver stopped walking, and Jimmy peered his head over the fence at him.

“It seemed like he knew what to do and he kept calm,” Josh said. “We were watching his exit the whole time to ensure he safely left. We of course gave him permission to stay as long as he needed!”

The driver calmly lifted his arms to make himself appear larger, and Jimmy hopped back over the fence and took off toward a neighbor’s yard.

“Getting the motion alerts is helpful to know when it is/isn’t safe to go outside, especially with two young kids and a dog,” Josh said. “We’ve waited to go outside and also come in early based on wildlife.”
