The Washington Football team may be finally ready for a new name

Story at a glance

  • The team announced in July it would retire the Redskins name after it had long been criticized as a racial slur against Native Americans.
  • The organization sent out more than 30 names to choose from, although not every season-ticket holder was given the same list.
  • Some of the name suggestions include the Redwolves, Aviators, Warriors, Griffins, Armada, Belters, Renegades, Archers and Commanders, among others.

The Washington Football Team is soliciting input from fans on a possible new name after the franchise retired its Redskins moniker last summer.

NBC Sports Washington reports the team sent surveys to season-ticket holders with lists of several name suggestions to help get a feel for what names fans may be leaning toward.

“This is an ongoing, iterative process — we’ve used focus groups, stakeholder interviews, large-scale surveys, and other qualitative and quantitative approaches to understand what fans want and what types of names resonate with our fans,” team president Jason Wright said in an email to fans.

“To that end, we want to ask all of YOU for your input on what kinds of names are most meaningful to you — which concepts represent what you love about this organization and what it means to you,” Wright said.

Team officials have said they’d like to have a new name in place for 2022 as the team will continue for 2021 with the Washington Football Team brand. It’s also possible the team sticks with that name permanently.
