The Department of Defense is denying reports that went viral claiming a number of dogs that worked with the U.S. military were left behind in Afghanistan as the last U.S. troops pulled out of Kabul this week. 

“To correct erroneous reports, the U.S. Military did not leave any dogs in cages at Hamid Karzai International Airport, including the reported military working dogs,” Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby said in a tweet Tuesday

“Photos circulating online were animals under the care of the Kabul Small Animal Rescue, not dogs under our care,” Kirby added.

Kabul Small Animal Rescue is a veterinary clinic and animal rescue that operates in Afghanistan. 

The Pentagon said the military did not leave any of its working dogs behind in Afghanistan and “went to great lengths” to help the Kabul Small Animal Rescue, according to Defense One

The denial from the Pentagon comes after photos showing dogs locked in cages the airport circulated online, prompting sharp criticism of the Biden administration from Republican lawmakers and animal advocacy groups. 

The American Humane Society on Monday slammed the military in a statement Monday and offered to help transport the alleged military dogs back to U.S. soil. The group also called on Congress to act on the matter.
