A 20-year-old senior at Boston College is believed to be the first turbaned Sikh to play Division I baseball, according to the school. A spokesperson for the NCAA told NBC News it doesn’t record the races or religions of players.

“I’m a man, I’m a Sikh man, and I’m proud of who I am,” Samrath Singh told NBC News.

Singh grew up in New Jersey playing the sport and committed to Boston College early in his senior year.

“I was always able to throw hard, and I was a pretty decent pitcher,” he said. “I never really thought about it too hard, but my dad really pushed me my sophomore year of high school to attend some showcase camps. He saw something in me that I didn’t see or care to look for.”

After undergoing surgery and rehabilitation for an elbow injury, Singh pitched his first college game in the spring of 2020, and when it came time to step up to the mound, wearing his turban, like he has since he was around 2-4 years old, was never a question.

“It’s not a burden,” he said. “That’s what goes along with being Sikh. When I was younger, maybe I didn’t realize that, and I would get angry. But as I’ve gotten older, I understand that this is a blessing.”
