Melissa Sue Robinson has thrown her hat into the ring for the 2022 Idaho gubernatorial election, giving her the distinction of being the first transgender person to run for the governor’s office in the Gem State.

Local outlet KTVB reported that Robinson issued a press release confirming the news. The candidate, 70, is originally from Nampa, where she launched a bid for mayor back in 2009. 

She has also unsuccessfully run for seats in the Idaho House of Representatives and state Senate. In the 2022 gubernatorial elections, she will campaign as a Democrat.

The press release reportedly outlines her candidacy as a positive in the forthcoming race and gives insight into her background. Robinson legally changed her name in 1998 and elected to undergo gender-reassignment surgery a year later.

She noted that she hopes between her candidacy and her organization the National Association for the Advancement of Transgender People, more Idahoans will understand the trans community better.  

Robinson joins other candidates like GOP members Jeff Cotton, Ammon Bundy, Chris Hammond, Edward Humphreys, Lisa Marie and Cody Usabel who have filed paperwork to launch bids, per CNN.

Incumbent Brad Little, another Republican, is set to run again, against current state GOP Lt. Gov. Janice McGeachin.
