A bestselling children’s book, advertised as an LGBTQ+ book on Amazon, compares being trans to pretending to be a walrus.
The picture book “Johnny the Walrus,” by Matt Walsh, a political commentator and podcast host for the conservative news site The Daily Wire, equates the trans experience with a young boy who imagines he is a walrus.
In the book, a wildly imaginative child named Johnny envisions himself as many things, including a walrus.
“But when the internet people find out Johnny likes to make-believe, he’s forced to make a decision between the little boy he is and the things he pretends to be — and he’s not allowed to change his mind,” reads a description of the book on Amazon.
“Johnny the Walrus” is now the #1 bestselling book in Amazon’s “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Books” category.
“Folks you have to admit this is all extremely funny,” Walsh wrote on Twitter this week. “Me becoming a number one bestselling LGBT author is the twist no one saw coming.”
Walsh has been a vocal critic of the LGBTQ+ community, specifically the trans community, and in an episode of his podcast, “The Matt Walsh Show,” in May, he said doctors who perform gender-affirming surgeries for trans youths are “plastic surgeons basically acting like Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.”
In the same episode, he said transgender youths who are put on hormones and have their bodies “mutilated” are being “sexually violated” by doctors, whom he compared to “Nazi scientists.”
In an appearance on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle” this week, Walsh said Amazon listed “Johnny the Walrus” as an LGBTQ+ book without his knowledge.
“They did this on their own,” he told host Laura Ingraham, adding that, according to Amazon, he’s now “one of the leading LGBT voices in the country right now.”
Amazon did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
“I think people are buying the book because we need a little bit of sanity in our culture and especially in children’s books,” Walsh said. “I mean any parent – I’m a parent myself – and we know that if you go to the children’s section at Barnes & Noble’s, you look at all the titles, and it’s like being at an antifa rally … with all the left-wing propaganda.”
Walsh said books like his were important to shield children from “brainwashing.”
“Gender ideology is so absurd that they realize that if they want to convince people of it, they have to get to them when they’re very, very young and they’re not able to distinguish between fantasy and reality and make these kinds of common-sense judgments,” he said. “And that’s why it’s so important for them to brainwash the kids early. And it’s why it’s important to protect our kids from that brainwashing.”
Amazon in the past has faced backlash for selling anti-trans books, including Abigail Shrier’s “Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters.” An Amazon employee in April filed an internal complaint, claiming the book violates the company’s policy against selling books “that frame LGBTQ+ identity as a mental illness.”
