“We lost the [slur], I mean the Jewish guy. I hate to say it but that’s what people used to say behind his back — Gary Frisch...He was the guy in charge of our budget,” Hoey said on his program.

After the program aired and clips of Hoey using the anti-Semitic slur began to circulate on social media, Hoey faced mounting calls to resign from the Lowell School Committee.

“To fully represent the interest and diversity of our students and our community, we must not only join together in rejecting this language, but continue working towards that more perfect union,” Lowell Mayor John Leahy said in a statement Wednesday.

Leahy called for a special joint meeting of the committee and the Lowell City Council to present a motion to demand Hoey’s resignation, but before that could take place, Hoey posted a Facebook video on Friday apologizing and announced he was stepping down.

“As of today, I’m resigning from the Lowell School Committee,” Hoey said in the video.

“I’m so sorry to that individual that was hurt by this, and I’m sorry to every individual across the country,” he said.
