Story at a glance:
- Humanity began in Africa, and when people started branching out to different locations of the world, depending on the UV rays of the sun and the temperature, people’s skins became altered.
- By moving away from the equator, you don’t get enough UV, which means you don’t get enough vitamin D and "then you break down your folates.”
- ”You have to have it in perfect balance.”
It is elementary to say racism is morally wrong, but ever had an educator invalidate racism to its last element?
Humanity began in Africa, and people started branching out to different locations of the world and expanding civilizations. Depending on the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun and the temperature, people’s skins were altered as a result of getting too much or too little vitamins, to sum up what Bill Nye the science guy said on TikTok.
Although he is famously not a scientist — he is an engineer who does science things and is best known for his own TV show in the 1990s before going on to star in a Netflix series titled “Bill Nye Saves the World” — Nye gave a basic lesson to a younger generation on why racism is scientifically dumb.
Moving away from the equator, you don’t get enough UV light, which means you don’t get enough vitamin D, Nye said.
“If you get too much ultraviolet, then you break down your folates. You have to have it in perfect balance, and because the ultraviolet varies, the color of our skin varies,” Nye said.
Folate is a type of vitamin B which helps produce healthy red blood cells and also make or repair DNA, the National Institutes of Health reported.
“That’s it everybody, that’s why we have different colored skin, but we’re all one species.”
The lesson was important as Nye explains that “we’re not treating each other fairly,” and he highlighted how there is no superior race because we are one species.
