Authorities are investigating antisemitic vandalism of The Temple Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park.

The vandals used paint and black permanent markers on the historic burial site of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the Valley News first reported. Park staff first reported the vandalism the morning of Oct. 1.

“We were heartbroken to discover this act of vandalism to the temple monument and grave of the Saint-Gaudens family and we condemn both the act and the language used,” Superintendent Rick Kendall wrote in a statement on Facebook. “We are already working with National Park Service conservators to carefully restore the monument.”

Rainey McKenna, a park spokesperson, told Valley News that the vandalism “does not appear to be random,” although the family was not Jewish.

Conservators from the National Park Service began treatment on Oct. 4 and are expected to finish the restoration by Oct. 15, according to the park service.

The Temple, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was constructed in plaster in 1905 before Saint-Gaudens’ wife, Augusta, commissioned a reconstruction of the site in marble after his death in 1907.

The Saint-Gaudens family began spending their summers in Cornish in 1885, leading to the formation of the Cornish Art Colony.
