In his new book, former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows claims that the former president’s blood oxygen levels were “dangerously low” after he tested positive for COVID-19 last year, The New York Times reported.

The former president long denied the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic, and new details about his health potentially allege he was much more gravely ill than what he let on after contracting the virus.

Meadows’ book, entitled “The Chief’s Chief,” which hit stores this week, contains a passage detailing how Trump’s oxygen level dropped to 86 prior to admission to Walter Reed hospital in October of last year, according to The New York Times. A blood oxygen level of 95 is considered on the low end of normal, according a CNN medical analyst.

“[The book] describes the White House doctors at some point considering just putting him on oxygen in the White House and hoping for the best, which is shockingly reckless,” CNN medical analyst Dr. Jonathan Reiner said in a recent article. “You know, the President of the United States was 74 years old. And obviously, clearly obese. Obesity is a risk factor for mortality, as is age over 70. So he had multiple risk factors for dying from this virus.

“Then they demonstrate that his oxygenation level … [was] 86 percent, which is dangerously low. Those should have triggered an immediate admission to Walter Reed, without hesitation. The president was in danger of dying.”

Other details from Meadow’s book about Trump’s bout with COVID-19 were leaked earlier this week, including that the former president actually tested positive for the virus prior to his first debate with now-President Biden, seven days before he was hospitalized, according to The Washington Post.
