Elon Musk says he’ll sell Tesla shares to help ‘solve world hunger’ if UN can say how his money would be spent

Story at a glance

  • The U.N. World Food Program (WFP) Executive Director David Beasley recently called on the ultra-wealthy to help tens of millions of people facing starvation.
  • Beasley said a donation of just 2 percent of Musk’s wealth could help save 42 million people.
  • Musk is the richest man in the world with a net worth of more than $300 billion.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk is responding to a United Nations official’s claim that just a small percentage of his wealth could help solve world hunger.

In a recent interview with CNN, the U.N. World Food Program (WFP) Executive Director David Beasley called on the ultra-wealthy, namely Musk and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, to “step up now, on a one-time basis,” to help nations experiencing food shortages due to climate change and the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Beasley said a donation of just 2 percent of Musk’s wealth could save 42 million people who are currently on the brink of starvation. Musk is the richest man in the world with a net worth of more than $300 billion. He’s the first person on the planet to ever reach that milestone.

“$6 billion to help 42 million people that are literally going to die if we don’t reach them. It’s not complicated,” Beasley told CNN last week.

On Sunday, Musk responded to a repost of the article with the headline “2% of Elon Musk’s wealth could solve world hunger, says director of UN food scarcity organization.”

“If WFP can describe on this Twitter thread exactly how $6B will solve world hunger, I will sell Tesla stock right now and do it,” Musk tweeted Sunday

“But it must be open source accounting, so the public sees precisely how the money is spent,” he added.

Beasley responded to saying the headline of the article was inaccurate. The article was corrected to read Musk’s wealth could “help solve” world hunger.

“$6B will not solve world hunger, but it WILL prevent geopolitical instability, mass migration and save 42 million people on the brink of starvation,” he said.

“Let’s talk: It isn’t as complicated as Falcon Heavy, but too much at stake to not at least have a conversation. I can be on the next flight to you. Throw me out if you don’t like what you hear!” Beasley added.
