Houston police on Monday arrested at least eight climate change protesters who were demonstrating in front of Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-Texas) home for trespassing.

Authorities said about 60 to 70 activists joined the demonstration outside the Texas senator’s home around 11 a.m.

The activists were associated with the Sunrise Movement, a group that advocates political action on climate change, and had marched hundreds of miles from New Orleans to Houston to demand President Biden stop negotiations with Republicans, as well as pass the Civilian Climate Corps, a policy to create government jobs to tackle climate change.

The young activists were seen in front of the home with signs reading “NO DEALS WITH CLIMATE DENIERS,” and “WHICH SIDE ARE YOU ON BIDEN?”

“We occupied Ted Cruz’s lawn after our 400 mile march demanding Biden stop negotiating our futures away by meeting with climate deniers to negotiate away our lives,” the group said via Twitter Monday

Police said while the protest was peaceful and most demonstrators stayed on the sidewalk, a small group refused to get off the senator’s lawn after multiple warnings.

“The large majority of the group are extremely peaceful out there expressing their First Amendment rights to protest against climate change,” Assistant Police Chief Ban Tien said in a video posted on Twitter

“Unfortunately, there was a small group who was actually committing trespassing into private property in front of the senator’s residence,” he said.

Tien said police gave the protesters time to leave the location, but they refused. Eight were arrested on trespassing charges.

Cruz did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Changing America.
