As numerous wildfires engulf the state of California amid a historic heat wave, the raging wildfires can be seen from space.

In northern California, the plumes of smoke from the Salt fire burning around the volcano Mount Shasta were captured on weather satellites.

“It is very hot and dry,” said Suzi Johnson, a Shasta-Trinity National Forest spokesperson for the Salt fire, The Guardian reports.

The Pacific Northwest has been in the throes of a historic heat wave that has seen temperatures hit highs of 116 degrees in areas such as Portland. The extreme heat has led to a surge in sudden deaths believed to be a result of heat-related illnesses.

Numerous wildfires have appeared across the Pacific Northwest. Also in California, the Lava fire has been raging since lightning ignited the dry area of Siskiyou County last Friday. Meanwhile, there are more than 20 wildfires raging in Arizona.

With July 4 approaching, California firefighters are warning residents against setting off fireworks amid the volatile conditions that are prime for further igniting and spreading wildfires in the area.

“The fuels are bone dry,” said Los Angeles County Fire Chief Daryl Osby told The Guardian. “We are extremely concerned about the use of fireworks of all kinds.”
