Apple says it’s building one of the largest battery projects in the country to help support a solar farm that provides all of its renewable energy in California.

The tech giant announced Wednesday it’s constructing a grid-scale renewable energy storage facility that will be capable of storing 240 megawatt-hours of energy, enough to power more than 7,000 homes for one day.

The facility will be built next to the California Flats solar installation in Monterey County about 100 miles from Apple's Cupertino, Calif., headquarters. The installation is capable of providing 130-megawatts of power to Apple facilities when the sun is out but cannot store the power after the sun goes down.

The battery project is aiming to store excess energy generated during the day from the solar farm and deploy it when it is most needed.

“The challenge with clean energy - solar and wind - is that it’s by definition intermittent,” Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president for Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives, told Reuters

“If we can do it, and we can show that it works for us, it takes away the concerns about intermittency and it helps the grid in terms of stabilization. It’s something that can be imitated or built upon by other companies,” Jackson told the outlet.

Apple also announced Wednesday more than 110 of its global manufacturing partners are moving toward 100 percent renewable energy for their Apple production. The company said the commitments are equivalent to about 8 gigawatts of clean energy and will avoid generating 15 million metric tons of CO2e annually. That’s the equivalent of taking more than 3.4 million cars off the road each year.

Apple’s own operations have been carbon neutral since 2018, and last year the company set the goal to extend that to its entire supply chain by 2030.
