Story at a glance
- Local police in Australia tweeted a video of a kangaroo bounding through the central business district of a city.
- Adeleide is surrounded by a network of parks, which the kangaroo was last seen heading towards.
- Across the globe, people have been posting photos and videos of animals roaming normally busy areas.
Even as cities impose fines and other penalties on those who defy social distancing orders, there are some who just won’t listen. But you’d have to catch them first, which can be difficult when, in the case of one Australian suspect, they can travel up to 25 miles per hour.

Australia has been under a nationwide stay at home order since March 29, limiting public gatherings and asking people to stay at home except for essential activities. The parks, however, remain open for recreation, although the public has been asked to practice social distancing.
Originally home to more than 200 species, the Adelaide Park Lands are protected by the government and feature trails, sporting areas and outdoor event space.
The country is home to about 50 million kangaroos, roughly twice its human population, and while it’s not necessarily common for them to be cited in cities, empty streets have encouraged animals all over the world to venture out into normally busy areas.
