The Debswana mining company reportedly uncovered a 1,098 carat stone, making it the world’s third largest diamond.

The company, which is described as a 50/50 partnership between the people of Botswana and DeBeers, discovered the diamond on June 1 in Botswana’s Jwaneng Mine.

“It is the largest diamond discovered in Debswana’s history and one of the largest known discoveries of a gem-quality diamond anywhere in the world,” Debswana said in a statement

Debswana hosted the first official showing of the diamond with the President of the Republic of Botswana, Mokgweetsi Eric Masisi, on June 16, according to the firm.

The diamond is surpassed in size by a 3,106-carat stone found in South Africa in 1905 and a 1,109-carat gem unearthed in Botswana in 2015, The Guardian reported. Debswana’s latest discovery also marks the largest diamond ever found in the Jwaneng mine, according to the company.

“Debswana will work with the Government of the Republic of Botswana and De Beers to value and sell the diamond to ensure it returns maximum benefit for the people of Botswana; and will communicate further plans to bring this unique treasure to market in due course,” the company’s statement concluded.
