Fisker Inc. has promised “the world’s most sustainable vehicle” by 2022. How are they going to do it? Well, a solar paneled roof, for one.
“We are aiming to disrupt the automotive industry by challenging all conventions, development time, manufacturing scale-up, customer ownership experience, vehicle financing and service,” said Henrik Fisker, chairman and CEO of Fisker Inc., when the company first debuted its plans in March. “This is no small feat, but we truly believe we are entering a new era where customers are driving the demand for radical change. People want mobility as a service, delivered through exciting, affordable vehicles with a hassle-free experience.”

In addition to the solar roof, the all-electric SUV boasts fully recycled carpeting, a vegan and eco-suede interior and the promise that Fisker will repurpose any discarded rubber waste generated during tire manufacturing.
But just because it’s environmentally friendly, doesn’t mean it won’t be high-tech. Fisker is advertising an immersive display, augmented reality features and even a karaoke mode — all with four wheel drive. It’s patented “California Mode” opens nine glass windows and panels around the cabin and drops the rear hatch, giving the SUV the open-air feel of a convertible.
Since the company debuted the vehicle earlier this year, Fisker announced that Magna International, a global contract automaker, acquired a 6 percent stake in the startup, which is in the middle of what Business Insider called “a reverse merger.”
“We have delivered the Fisker Ocean in record time: not just another show vehicle, but a drivable production-intent prototype sitting on a fully engineered and durability tested platform, with a production-ready powertrain and battery pack. The future is about delivering product value, sustainability and a unique customer experience,” Fisker said.
The vehicle will start at $37,499 in the United States, comparable to Tesla’s 2020 Model 3.
