One person has died and nine were taken to the hospital after a Florida condo building collapsed early Thursday morning. So far, 35 people have been pulled out of the destruction.
The Champlain Towers South building in Surfside, Fla., crumbled at 1 a.m., leaving half of the building completely collapsed and many displaced, Business Insider reported.
The condo complex is one block from Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump’s Miami home.
Officials say that it is more difficult to rescue people from the rubble because of the way the building collapsed. Crews were able to rescue a 10-year-old boy in the early morning, as well as a young person who was pulled from the building’s crumbled balcony, according to Business Insider.
However, as of 5:30 a.m., it is not certain if more people are trapped, and officials fear the death count could be higher, ABC News reports.
“The building has literally pancaked,” Mayor Charles W. Burkett said during a morning press conference, according to ABC News. “It’s heartbreaking because it doesn’t seem to me … that we will find people alive.”
The 12-story building with 136 units was 40-years-old and in the process of being inspected, but that process was never completed, NBC reported.
It is still unclear why the building collapsed.
Two and three-bedroom units in the condo building range in price from $590,000 to $915,000, according to Business insider.
