Story at a glance

  • New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced Wednesday the city plans on redesigning 1,000 dangerous intersections.
  • NYPD officers will also enforce a new rule that requires all drivers and cyclists to come to a complete stop at a crosswalk where there is no traffic light or stop sign.
  • Mayor Adams said the NYPD will give out $50 tickets to people who break the new rule.

New York City officials are planning on redesigning 1,000 intersections across the five boroughs to improve traffic safety.

After a five-year dip, traffic-related deaths began increasing in the city in 2019 and then surged last year.

At least 250 people died on a city roadway in 2021, according to the city’s Vision Zero dashboard, the highest number of traffic fatalities since 2014. In addition, more than 45,000 people were injured by a vehicle at one of the city’s intersections last year, the tracker shows.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced the plan Wednesday and said it will also include constructing 100 raised crosswalks annually, building more bike corrals, enforcing a new traffic rule requiring that drivers and cyclists fully stop for pedestrians at intersections without traffic lights or stop signs.

NYPD officers will aggressively enforce the new rule by writing up $50 tickets for those drivers and cyclists who break it and arrest drivers who injure pedestrians at crosswalks, according to the New York Daily News.

“After the tragedy of 2021, when traffic fatalities in New York City reached their highest level in nearly a decade, we clearly need to turbo-charge Vision Zero — and fast,” said Adams.

Vision Zero is an initiative launched by former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio that aimed to eradicate traffic deaths and injuries.

It is still unclear when construction on the intersection redesigns will begin.
