Elon Musk to unveil revolutionary Neuralink device on Friday

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced his brain chip startup Neuralink will show off a working device on Friday.

The company founded by Musk in 2016 has been working on technology that would theoretically be able to implant a microchip into the human brain to monitor and stimulate brain activity.

The startup is aiming to develop brain-machine interfaces for the ambitious goal of helping humans keep pace with advanced artificial intelligence. The technology would supplement human brain power as well as treat the paralyzed and those with brain disorders.

Musk tweeted early Wednesday that there will be a live webcast of a working Neuralink device, apparently alluding to the brain-machine interface — a device that would link human brains to computers. He did not provide specific details on what exactly the demo would entail.

The entrepreneur said, however, the display will include the latest version of a sewing-machine-like device that surgically implants electrodes into the microchip and also show neurons “firing in real-time,” although it’s unclear what that means.

The company first held a public presentation of the insertion device that implants into the electrodes in July 2019. The startup has said it is working towards improving the brain-machine implant process until the procedure becomes as seamless as Lasik.

Musk has also previously discussed using the technology to enable people to control phones or computers with their brain and said the technology could enable people to stream music directly to their mind.

He said last year that the company had carried out tests on rats and monkeys, saying “a monkey has been able to control a computer with its brain.” Musk said in May the company could start human trials within a year.
