The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is now recommending that pregnant women get the COVID-19 vaccine.

The new guidance comes on the heels of a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine that looked at self-reported data of more than 35,000 people who were pregnant and received one of the mRNA vaccines developed by Pfizer or Moderna.

Researchers from the CDC said pregnant patients reported typical vaccine side effects such as pain at the injection site, fatigue, headaches and muscle aches, but no safety concerns were observed for pregnant women or their babies.

The study said rates of preterm births and miscarriages among vaccinated people who completed their pregnancies during the duration of the study were similar to those in the general population.

Early clinical trials of the current COVID-19 vaccines approved for emergency use did not include pregnant women, limiting data and creating a sense of uncertainty.

“CDC recommends that pregnant people receive the COVID-19 vaccine,” CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said during a news briefing Friday.

“We know that this is a deeply personal decision and I encourage people to talk to their doctors or primary care providers to determine what is best for them and their baby,” Walensky said.

The study did not include the Johnson & Johnson vaccine that was authorized in the U.S. in late February.
