California will become the first state in the U.S. to require COVID-19 vaccinations for all eligible public and private school children attending in-person classes.

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) on Friday announced all elementary through high school students in the state will be required to get the jab once the vaccine receives full Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for different age groups.

Currently, the FDA has only fully approved the coronavirus vaccine for people 16 and older and emergency use authorization for those 12 to 15.

Newsom said the requirement will take effect for corresponding age groups the semester following full approval from federal regulators. He said he expects the requirement will apply to grades seven and up starting in July 2022.

The governor’s order adds COVID-19 vaccines to the state’s list of immunizations required for school attendance, such as those for measles and mumps.

Students would be allowed to seek religious and medical exemptions.

“We want to end this pandemic, we are all exhausted by it,” Newsom said during a news conference at a San Francisco middle school.

The announcement comes as several of California’s large school districts have already moved to require vaccinations among students. The Los Angeles Unified School District last month voted to require all eligible students to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by early next year.
