A shootout between a pair of rival gangs on a beachfront near the Mexican resort city of Cancún left two suspected gang members dead and sent tourists running for cover Thursday.

Authorities said a group of about 15 people armed with long guns stormed the beach in front of the Azul Beach Resort and the Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancún in Puerto Morelos.

The incident sent tourists scrambling to get out of harm’s way.

“Guests are telling me they were playing volleyball on the beach, gunman approached firing gun. Everyone ran from beach and swimming pools. Staff hustled us into hidden rooms behind the kitchens,” Mike Sington, a guest at the Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancún, tweeted

The deadly shooting comes weeks after a travel blogger from California and a German tourist were gunned down in the nearby beach resort of Tulum during a shootout between gang members.
