Michigan-based Alexander & Hornung is recalling some 234,391 pounds of ham and pepperoni products over listeria contamination concerns, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Sunday

The recall applies to 17 products that were produced on various dates and shipped to retail locations across the country. The affected products can be identified by the establishment number “EST.M10125” inside the USDA mark of inspection. 

The company alerted the FSIS to the problem after product sampling reported positive listeria results.

“While there have been no illnesses or complaints associated with the products and there is no conclusive evidence that the products were contaminated at the time of shipment, the voluntary recall is being initiated out of an abundance of caution,” Alexander & Hornung said in a statement

Eating food contaminated with the bacterium listeria can cause listeriosis, which primarily affects pregnant women, newborns, older adults and those with weakened immune systems. 

Listeriosis can cause a wide range of symptoms, including fever, headache, stiff neck, muscle aches and others.
