Story at a glance

  • LA County now leads the nation in confirmed coronavirus cases.
  • Southern California as a whole is experiencing sharp rises in cases.

Los Angeles County now leads the U.S. in coronavirus cases, reporting 88,262 confirmed cases according to county health statistics.

As of June 23, there were 2,364 new cases confirmed.

California is one of the Sun Belt states — including Texas, Arizona, Florida and Arkansas — that are experiencing a sharp rise in new COVID-19 cases.

ABC News reports that trailing L.A. County is Cook County, Ill., which records 87,700 active cases, and Queens in New York City, with 64,000 confirmed cases.

The total fatalities accompanying L.A. County’s dramatic data is 3,171.

Larger countywide data shows a steady growth in new cases since the onset of the pandemic, despite California as a whole shutting down and practicing social distancing. The unrelenting increase has prompted Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) to make masks mandatory when in public.

In addition to increased protocols, L.A. County will be implementing thermal cameras into the Los Angeles International Airport, and mobile testing units will be deployed to approximately 25,000 people at several Los Angeles public housing locations to help screen for virus spread in congregate settings.

L.A. County Department of Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer acknowledged the fatigue people feel with the coronavirus lockdowns, but said the virus still needs to be taken seriously.

“Our job and our calling is to keep as many people as safe as possible during this pandemic,” Ferrer said. “While frustration boils over in our communities as people are done with this virus, this virus is not done with us.”

Despite this harrowing statistic as well as recently noting a record high of 5,813 new coronavirus cases on June 23, L.A. County continues with reopening. Beaches, wineries, bars, piers and gyms are some of the public spaces now opened.
