Story at a glance

  • Fauci’s comments came during the first White House coronavirus task force briefing in months.
  • Vice President Pence claimed all 50 states are opening up safely and responsibly, acknowledging cases have been increasing “precipitously” in some states.
  • The U.S. currently leads the world in the number of cases and deaths. More than 2.4 million cases have been recorded with more than 124,000 coronavirus-related fatalities.

Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, is urging Americans not to take risks with the coronavirus as cases continue to surge in several states.

“A risk for you is not just isolating for you, because if you get infected, you are part, innocently or inadvertently, propagating that dynamic process of a pandemic, because the chances are that if you get infected, that you’re going to infect someone else,” Fauci said Friday during the first White House coronavirus task force briefing in months.

Fauci pleaded with Americans to consider that the outbreak will not end until everyone does their part.

“You have an individual responsibility to yourself, but you have a societal responsibility, because if we want to end this outbreak, really end it and then hopefully when a vaccine comes and puts the nail in the coffin, we’ve got to realize that we are part of the process,” he said, adding that people can either be part of the solution or part of the problem.

Health officials in the past several weeks have expressed concern that people are not adhering to public health guidance meant to help mitigate the transmission of infection, including social distancing and wearing masks.

Meanwhile, Vice President Pence claimed all 50 states are opening up safely and responsibly, acknowledging cases have been increasing “precipitously” in some states, but praising the administration’s response to the pandemic.

Fauci’s comments come as the U.S. Thursday broke its record for the most coronavirus cases reported in a single day, with more than 40,000 cases.

Texas and Florida have been especially hit hard.

Florida reported nearly 9,000 new COVID-19 cases Friday, soaring past its previous single-day record of more than 5,500 set on Wednesday. Texas is also dealing with record single-day cases and hospitalizations.

The U.S. currently leads the world in the number of cases and deaths. More than 2.4 million cases have been recorded with more than 124,000 coronavirus-related fatalities.
