  • The record will be used as a way to remind patients who receive the first dose of the vaccine to come in for their second dose weeks later.
  • The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine requires a second dose to be administered 21 days apart, while Moderna’s second dose is given 28 days from the first.
  • The technology could also be a way for people to prove they’ve been vaccinated against the virus.

Residents in Los Angeles County who receive the COVID-19 vaccine will be offered a digital record of their vaccination they can store in their Apple Wallet, according to Bloomberg

The county is partnering with software company Healthvana to begin offering the vaccination record to the Wallet app on the iPhone or the competing Google platform as a way to remind patients who receive the first dose of the vaccine to come in for their second dose weeks later.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine requires a second dose to be administered 21 days apart, while Moderna’s second dose is given 28 days from the first.

“We’re really concerned. We really want people to come back for that second dose,” Claire Jarashow, the director of vaccine preventable disease control at Los Angeles County’s Department of Public Health, told Bloomberg.

“We just don’t have the capacity to be doing hundreds of medical record requests to find people’s first doses and when they need to get their second,” she told the news outlet.

The technology could also be a way for people to prove they’ve been vaccinated against the virus.

Healthvana is reportedly in discussions about applying the technology with employers, universities and concert venues. Healthvana CEO Ramin Bastani told Bloomberg the record could be useful to “prove to airlines, to prove to schools, to prove to whoever needs it,” that a person has in fact received the shot.

Bastani said he believes other similar services will arise as more people receive the vaccine.

“It’s not going to be like one credit card you can use across the US,” he told Bloomberg. “Sometimes you can pay cash, sometimes you can use your Apple Wallet.”

The Los Angeles-based company began working with the county earlier this year to provide coronavirus test results to patients in the area.

Los Angeles County, the most populous in the country, has reported more than 733,000 cases and 9,555 deaths over the course of the pandemic, according to county public health data.
