  • “Between late December of 2020 and last month, a total of 3,362 people apparently died after getting the COVID vaccine in the United States. That’s an average of roughly 30 people everyday,” Tucker Carlson said Wednesday.
  • The segment prompted controversy from critics who pointed out that just because someone died after receiving the vaccine doesn’t mean they died as a consequence of the vaccine.
  • Gupta on Thursday called Carlson’s segment “reckless” and “dangerous.”

Neurosurgeon and CNN medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta on Thursday weighed in on Fox News Host Tucker Carlson’s segment in which he put forward the idea that COVID-19 vaccines may be linked to an excessive number of deaths.

During the segment Wednesday night, Carlson noted vaccines are not dangerous but raised the question about how many Americans have died after getting the jab.

He went on to cite government data from the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS).

“Between late December of 2020 and last month, a total of 3,362 people apparently died after getting the COVID vaccine in the United States. That’s an average of roughly 30 people everyday,” he said.

“It’s clear that what is happening now, for whatever reason, is not even close to normal. It is not even close to what we see in previous years with previous vaccines. Most vaccines are not accused of killing large numbers of people,” he added.

The segment prompted controversy from critics who pointed out that just because someone died after receiving the vaccine doesn’t mean they died as a consequence of the vaccine.

Gupta also noted that the VAERS system is a system where anyone can report claims of an adverse event so the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) can evaluate possible links between vaccines and side effects. Carlson acknowledged there is debate over the reporting system.

The CDC has said its analyzed reports of deaths following COVID-19 vaccines through VAERS and has found no credible links.

“A review of available clinical information, including death certificates, autopsy, and medical records has not established a causal link to COVID-19 vaccines,” the CDC said in a report on adverse effects that was updated Wednesday.

Gupta on Thursday called Carlson’s segment “reckless” and “dangerous.”

“What he’s done is he’s basically looked at these open-system adverse reporting systems and said ‘hey look, this suggests that 30 people a day are dying of the vaccine.’ Absolutely not true,” Gupta said on CNN’s New Day

“The problem is that it continues to stir up this vaccine hesitance or outright vaccine reluctance,” he said. “It is so frustrating because you know, we’ve been stutter-starting our way through reporting on this pandemic for a year because instead of continuing to build a knowledge tree, we’ve had to continuously fact check and correct misinformation."

“It’s still happening in the midst of what is arguably one of the greatest scientific achievements that we’ve ever had maybe ever: these vaccines,” he added.
