CDC investigating heart inflammation following COVID-19 vaccination

Story at a glance

  • An article raised awareness of heart inflammation following a COVID-19 vaccination in several cases
  • Only young males were affected.
  • The CDC highlights that the risk is rare and vaccination to reduce COVID-19 transmission is still recommended.

Following the publication of a research article documenting severe side effects within seven teenage boys after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine, health regulators are now trying to gauge the prevalence of heart inflammation as a rare side effect in teen and young adult vaccine recipients.

The Associated Press (AP) reports that the article, published Friday in Pediatrics, saw instances of heart inflammation among the group of teen boys aged 14 to 19 after receiving a shot of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.

All seven boys developed a type of heart muscle inflammation called myocarditis after receiving a vaccination in April or May. Symptoms, primarily chest pain, developed a few days following the inoculation.

None of the boys were critically ill, and all were sent home from the hospital after two to six days, according to AP.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are aware of the instances of myocarditis following a COVID-19 vaccination, along with pericarditis, the inflammation of the lining outside of the heart.

CDC officials note that in most cases, patients experiencing heart inflammation are 16 years of age or older and that the risk is rare enough for public health officials to continue recommending a vaccination for people age 12 and older.

“CDC and its partners are investigating these reports of myocarditis and pericarditis following mRNA COVID-19 vaccination,” the agency stated
